The Straight Stream Back to Nailsworth Index
Twice, in the nineteen thirties and seventies, Nailsworth was the victim of disaster level floods. Hardly surprising in view of all the streams which meet in the town centre. When the "New Road" was created between Cossack Square and Spring Hill in 1946, deep research took place in order to create a flood prevention scheme. Much of the work involved was underground, but the straight stream which became part of the Mortimer Gardens on the site of what had been Day's Mill pond was an essential part of the scheme. Newcomers arriving in the eighties were critical of the design of Old Market and the gardens. However, they were part of our history which evolved in the seventies and are a credit to the initiative of a very small UDC with a tiny budget and none of the advantages of a centre which had evolved over the years.
