The family has strong connections with Coldingham, Berwickshire. Down the road, St Abbs Harbour, reached by a Cliffside footpath from Coldingham Bay was a favourite place. It was always busy as all the different fishing activities were carried out. We watched the boats sailing in and out; fishermen mending nets; fish being unloaded. The Life Boat was a great attraction. There were some houses where people could go for a holiday but most were inhabited by locals, many with sheds for fishing equipment. There was a school and a church. Nowadays it is a centre for deep sea diving and there's a tourist centre, an art gallery, a bird sanctuary and a museum. The formerly rather isolated walk to St Abbs Head via the lighthouse, which is now a home, is well used. |
