When Newmarket was a hamlet occupied by workers at Hillier's factory, everyone used the local phone box. Now, Hillier's and the post office shop have disappeared. Along with the refurbished cottages there is a new development and everyone has their own phone (and mobile!). So the phone box has gone. Newmarket is no longer the hamlet as we knew it but it is a lovely development with a feeling of community. This is how it used to look and the good news is that the "George" is still the community pub. (Known much further afield than the village!) |
