Lake of Menteith Back to Scotland Index
In Perthshire, close to Aberfoyle and the Trossachs, this is the only "Lake" in Scotland. Now days it is a popular tourist attraction. As well as fishing, if the weather is right, it is an important curling centre the ice has to be ten inches thick before the activity can take place. My father was best man to my godfather, a pianist who became paralysed all down one side during the First World War. We spent a lot of time in our childhood at his home which overlooked the lake. His wife used to organise charity concerts in which we took part. They had a rowing boat with which we could go the island of Inchmahome where there is a ruined Augustine Priory. Mary Queen of Scots once sought refuge there for three weeks. Members of his family still live there.
