Some people will remember Jeanie Hartley who was descended from the Clissold family of Chestnut Hill that ran the brewery. There were seven daughters, two of them married members of the Hartley family. Some ended up at Whitehall. Jeanie, when left on her own, made it an open home for all. She is remembered by the seat in front of Christ Church. The building of Homefield started around 1971. Until then there were open green fields and fewer houses on the Shortwood Road. Newmarket Road was narrower with lovely stone walls on both sides. The fields were grazed by Sam Hodges' cattle. |
