M.B.E. J.P. Local lad George Mills spent over 50 years of his life serving the community, largely through local government, but also by being involved with local activities such as sport and even music. A very private person, he married late in life. When he became deaf, although he read every newspaper, was up to date with local activities, and not afraid to communicate his views through the press, most of his time was spent in his garden. With the help of Joe Hurcombe, for many years the gardener at Newmarket House, and a greenhouse given to him by the family when he retired from public life, he created many colourful scenes. A memorial to him, given by the community, was opened outside the Library in June 2003. |
