This sketch illustrates the latest item in a long story. Two Mills stood on the Inch Brook in the Nailsworth area, although until 1892 they were in Avening parish. Cloth was woven until 1810 after which a variety of industrial activities took place. At one point there were 16 different items being manufactured including pins and chemicals, and later, "flock and shoddy". In 1973 the largest "tin" factory you can imagine was developed on the site, for a firm of structural engineers involved with the railway. However, it was never occupied, and today, after years of negotiation, has emerged the most attractive retiral village for people over the age of 55, with all levels of care available as required. The name indicates the natural fountain which has been restored. |
