Bruton's Paint Shed Back to Nailsworth Index
For many years "Grampy Smith" the blacksmith had his smithy in the area behind today's "Bruton's", which dates from the day when Mary Smith married William Bruton in 1886. Amongst other things they were wheel wrights and made coaches. The "Paint Shop" which today is at the entrance to the footpath that leads to Hanover Gardens, originally came from the Australian air force site at Leighterton and just had a canvas roof. Cyril Bruton ran his plumbing in the next door building, now run by the "Emmaus" charity. Today the paint shop has a real roof and is a fascinating building which is usually hidden behind parked cars, but when this picture was painted it was quiet and approachable. The original ironmonger was where we now enjoy "The Mad Hatters" food and we can still watch the world going on outside the window.
